DIVERGE COMMUNITY BASH
Attending the Diverge Community Bash was a truly remarkable experience. From the moment I arrived, I could sense the thoughtfulness and care that had gone into making this event an inclusive and welcoming space. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, filled with individuals who were genuinely invested in fostering a sense of belonging and support. The highlight of the event for me was the sensory room, which provided a much-needed oasis for attendees who needed a break from the hustle and bustle. This space was meticulously designed with various seating options, air circulation, and an array of sensory tools and toys that catered to different needs. The sensory-friendly food and activities further underscored the event’s commitment to inclusivity, making it a model for how community gatherings should be structured.
One of the most compelling aspects of the event was its alignment with the mission of Humanities 101. Both Diverge Community Services and Humanities 101 are deeply rooted in neuroaffirmation and inclusion, emphasizing the importance of creating environments where neurodivergent individuals can truly thrive. Diverge’s focus on occupational therapy in Washtenaw County resonates with Humanities 101’s advocacy for micro-accommodations, demonstrating a shared dedication to empowering individuals in meaningful ways. It was particularly inspiring to see Diverge actively integrating the theory of micro-accommodations into their practice, reinforcing our mutual goal of fostering adaptive and supportive spaces. This alignment not only highlights the synergy between our organizations but also paves the way for continued collaboration and innovation in neurodivergent advocacy.
Events like the Diverge Community Bash play a crucial role in raising awareness, building networks, and reducing stigma surrounding neurodivergence. By creating a space that celebrates neurodiversity and prioritizes accessibility, the event showcased the importance of intentional design in community engagement. The networking opportunities facilitated at the Bash allowed for valuable exchanges of ideas and the strengthening of relationships that contribute to the broader movement of supporting neurodivergent individuals. Beyond just connecting people, events like these serve as a reminder of the necessity of protecting and expanding services for neurodivergent communities, ensuring that their voices are not only heard but also acted upon.
While I didn’t establish new organizational connections at the Bash, I deepened my ongoing relationship with Diverge Community Services. This partnership is particularly exciting as we move toward the October conference, where Diverge will be joining as an organizing partner. This collaboration will provide additional networking opportunities and reinforce our collective commitment to neuroaffirmation and inclusion. The ideas exchanged during the event will undoubtedly inform the development of future initiatives and partnerships, further expanding the reach and impact of our shared mission.
Reflecting on the experience, I was especially impressed by the sensory room. Its thoughtful design catered to a range of sensory needs, providing a quiet, comfortable, and accommodating environment. The inclusion of diverse seating options, air circulation, and sensory-friendly toys demonstrated a deep understanding of what makes an inclusive space truly effective. The sensory room stood as a testament to the event’s dedication to accessibility and neuroaffirmation, playing a significant role in making the Bash as successful as it was.
Ultimately, my experience at the Diverge Community Bash reinforced the importance of collaboration and intentional design in creating inclusive environments. It also highlighted the shared vision between Diverge Community Services and Humanities 101 in supporting neurodivergent individuals and fostering strong, connected communities. As we look ahead to the October conference and beyond, the lessons learned and relationships strengthened at the Bash will continue to shape our approach to building a more inclusive and affirming future.
